STAFF OF HO WEST DISTRICT ASSEMBLY EDUCATED ON FIRE SAFETY

On Monday, June 19, 2023, the Ho West District Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service, organized a one-day training session for the staff of the Assembly. The purpose of the training was to educate the staff on the causes of fire, the dangers of fire, and fire prevention methods.

The District Coordinating Director, Mr. Wisdom Kporngor, in his opening remarks said educating staff on fire safety plays a vital role in fire prevention at the workplace and homes. He added that the safety of staff is very important, hence, the need for the training to help maintain a safe and protective work environment.

ADOII Daniel Marshall Kporyi, in his presentation, stated that the core mandate of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is to save lives and offer humanitarian services. He touched on various aspects related to fire safety, including the hazards posed by fire, types of fires, principles of combustion, preventive measures, and the common causes of fire outbreaks.

He emphasized the potential hazards and risks associated with fires and also highlighted the importance of understanding fire behavior, the rapid spread of flames, and the potential for property damage, injuries, and loss of life. He mentioned common causes of fire outbreaks, such as electrical faults, cooking accidents, negligence, and improper handling of fire sources.

ADOII Kporyi also discussed effective fire prevention strategies to mitigate the risk of fire incidents. Participants were educated on the importance of maintaining a clean and organized working environment, proper storage and handling of flammable materials, and regular inspection and maintenance of fire safety equipment. He encouraged participants to be vigilant and proactive in identifying potential fire hazards in their respective work areas.

To enhance the participants’ understanding of fire safety techniques, ADOII Dennis Tay led the team in conducting practical demonstrations during the training session. These demonstrations focused on the proper use of fire extinguishers, the correct posture when dousing fires, and the proper procedures for extinguishing fires, such as the use of blankets or fire extinguishers. The staff had the opportunity to participate in learning how to handle fire extinguishers and effectively suppress fires using different types of extinguishing methods.

ADIO Dennis Tay said fighting is a shared responsibility and by fostering collaboration between stakeholders, we can work together to prevent fire outbreaks and ensure the safety and well-being of everyone.
