DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE TRAINS LIPW-GPSNP 2 BENEFICIARIES IN BEE KEEPING AND ORGANIC AGRO-CHEMICAL PREPARATION

On Friday, 21st June 2023, the Ho West District Assembly through the Department of Agriculture organized a one-day training program for over 60 beneficiaries under LIPW of the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP 2). The training aimed to equip the participants with essential knowledge and skills in beekeeping and production of organic fertilizers, weedicides and pesticides to promote sustainable farming practices. Beneficiaries were from Akome enclave, Dzolokpuita, Dzolo Gbogame and Dodome.

In his welcome address, the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Wisdom Kporngor expressed the Assembly’s commitment to building the capacity of the beneficiaries with the needed resources to ensure the success of the project. He disclosed that beneficiaries of the LIPW-GPSNP 2 through the guidance of the Department of Agriculture have the opportunity to do inter-cropping in the various CCMI plantations using the appropriate crops and methodologies.

Mr. Kporngor urged the beneficiaries to take the training seriously, emphasizing its potential for economic empowerment. He advised them to adhere to the use of the Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) whiles working at the various project sites to ensure their safety and well-being.

The District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Rashid Seth Asuo stressed the importance of equipping the beneficiaries with essential skills that would enable them to establish themselves and generate other sources of income at the end of the project implementation. He encouraged the participants to nurture the skills they would acquire during the training and utilize them effectively in their future endeavours.

Mr. Andrews Amegatse, the facilitator of the training, took participants through the significance of organic agro-chemicals in sustainable farming practices and their impact on environmental conservation, various methods of preparation, proper and effective application of the organic agro-chemicals to maximize their benefits.

On the bee keeping, the training covered the basics of setting up beehives, maintaining bee colonies, harvesting honey and its potential as a lucrative income generating activity.

To enhance the learning experience, practical demonstrations were carried out to give hands-on experience to the participants.
