The Ho West District Assembly has inaugurated seven (7) Town and Area Councils within the district. The inauguration took place from Tuesday 23rd April to Thursday 25th April, 2024. The ceremony marks a significant step towards decentralizing governance and bringing it closer to the grassroots level.
The Town and Area councils inaugurated were Yingor, Avatime, Weto, Kpedze, and Honuta-Kpoeta, Anyirawase and Tsito.
The Presiding Member, Hon. Osman Kasim, swore in the councils and Unit Committee Members. He led them to take the official oath, oath of secrecy, and oath of allegiance.
The District Coordinating Director, Mr. Wisdom Kporngor, welcomed all council members and congratulated the Unit Committee members on their election. He introduced the members to the model standing orders and briefed them on the composition as well as the sub-committees of the councils. He urged them not to relent in their core mandate and duties but to work and strengthen the substructures.
In his inaugural address, the District Chief Executive of Ho West, Hon. Ernest Victor Apau, admonished the newly inaugurated members to refrain from engaging in partisan politics in the discharge of their duties. This call, he indicated, aims at fostering unity and cooperation among council members in promoting development. He also encouraged the Unit Committee members to work closely with the Honorable Assembly Members to drive development initiatives and address the needs of the electoral areas they serve.
Hon. Apau outlined some of the roles of the Unit Committee members, which included supporting the Assembly to generate revenue, embarking on public education on government policies and programs, protecting the environment against destruction, promoting sanitation, ensuring peace and security, and undertaking development initiatives, among others. He called on the Chiefs and community members to support the various councils to enable them to work effectively.
The councils also conducted elections to choose their Chairpersons. These elected officials will play pivotal roles in guiding the councils and ensuring effective governance at the local level.
The following were elected Chairpersons of the five councils: Hon. Innocent Kwaku Adekpuitor as Chairperson for Yingor Area Council, Mr. Marcus Florentius Bright as Chairperson for Weto Area Council, Hon. Gertrude Adzo Borklo as Chairperson for Avatime Area Council, Hon. Pascal Newton Epou as Chairperson for Honuta/Kpoeta Area Council, and Mr. Karim Sulley as Chairperson for Kpedze Town Council, Hon. Constance Kwame Agbedienu, as Anyirawase Area Council and Kwawu Noble Mawuli as Chairperson for Tsito Town Council.
